Joyce Banda
Joyce Banda is a trailblazing Malawian leader known for her unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment, democracy and economic development. She made history as Malawi’s first female president, serving from 2012 to 2014, and was also the country’s first female vice president.
As only the second woman to lead an African nation, her presidency marked a significant milestone for gender representation in leadership on the continent.
Prior to her presidency, Banda held two key ministerial positions: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Gender and Child Welfare, she has always been committed to the empowerment of women and children. A passionate advocate for social justice, she founded the People’s Party and continues to champion inclusive governance.
Her leadership has earned her global recognition, including being named one of Forbes’ Most Powerful Women in the World and being featured in the BBC’s 100 Women list.
